Lee Krasner

An American abstract expressionist painter, with a strong speciality in collage, who was married to Jackson Pollock. Krasner was born in New York in 1908, the daughter of Russian, Yiddish-speaking Jews. Krasner was a force of nature, always pushing abstraction forward. Her work over 50 years suggests perpetual, restless reinvention, encompassing portraits, Cubist drawings, collage, assemblage, and large-scale abstract painting.

Working in oil on canvas, ink on paper, and mixed-media collage, Krasner produced works characterized by a sensuous painterly style, her large-scales collages often formed from the artist’s own cut-up paintings and drawings

Trained and influenced by George Bridgman and Hans Hofmann, Krasner is now seen as a major transitional figure within abstraction, who connected early-20th-century art with the new ideas of post-war America. She is also one of the few female artists to have had a retrospective show at the Museum of Modern Art.

Krasner exhibited with the American Abstract Artists group, through which she met Pollock; the two became vital critics and supporters of one another. “Painting…in which the inner and the outer man are inseparable, transcends technique, transcends subject and moves into the realm of the inevitable,” she said.

I love the shapes created in Krasners work, the mix of regular and natural forms makes the piece eye catching and interesting. Furthermore I enjoy the mix of shades of pink and green found in this particular work as it creates depth and contrast within the piece.
